Ingredients
- 2 bay leaves (whole)
- 1 carrot (grated)
- 2,400 ml water
- 850 gr meaty ham bones
- 325 gr smoked ham
- 300 gr tomatoes (cut)
- 260 gr navy beans
- 260 gr northern beans
- 260 gr beans (red)
- 240 gr pinto beans
- 200 gr black-eyed peas
- 240 ml chicken bouillon
- 120 gr onion (diced)
- 8 gr chili powder
- 2 gr thyme
- 1 gr pepper
- 1 ml worcestershire sauce
Place beans into 4 litre kettle, cover with 5 cm of water and allow to soak overnight. Drain water then add ham bones, water and bay leaves. Simmer covered for 2 hours. Remove ham bones and return any meat to kettle. Add bouillon, onions, chili and garlic powder, thyme, pepper, tomatoes, carrot and worcestershire sauce. Cover and simmer for 1 hour. Add water as needed. Serve with hot cornbread.
